Introduction

In the fast-paced world of digital transformation, kicking off a project effectively can make all the difference between success and stagnation. At PRIOT, we understand the critical importance of setting the right foundation from the very beginning. That’s why we use a powerful methodology known as a design sprint to start our projects.

This post will take you through our unique two-day design sprint process and explain why it’s a game-changer for mid to large companies looking for efficient and innovative development solutions.

What is a Design Sprint?

A design sprint is a time-constrained, five-phase process that uses design thinking to reduce the risk when bringing a new product, service, or feature to the market. Originally developed by Google Ventures, this methodology has gained widespread recognition for its ability to help teams quickly align on goals, validate ideas, and solve big challenges. At PRIOT, we have adapted the design sprint into a focused, two-day workshop tailored to meet the needs of our clients.

Why PRIOT Uses Design Sprints?

Unlike many other development agencies, PRIOT incorporates design sprints at the start of each project to ensure we deliver high-quality, efficient, and effective solutions. Our design sprint approach fosters close collaboration with our clients, encourages innovative thinking, and allows us to rapidly prototype and test ideas. This not only accelerates the development process but also significantly reduces the risks associated with launching new products or features.

How to do a Design Sprint – Our 2-Day Design Sprint Process

Day 1: Understanding and Planning

  1. Expert Talks: We begin by engaging with industry experts to gather valuable insights. These conversations help us understand the current landscape, identify potential challenges, and gain a deeper understanding of the client’s needs.
  2. How Might We Board: Next, we identify challenges and opportunities by framing them as “How might we…” questions. This approach helps us turn problems into opportunities for innovative solutions.
  3. Long Term Goals and Risks: Setting clear, long-term objectives is crucial. We work with our clients to define these goals and identify any potential risks that could impact the project’s success.
  4. Drawing the Map: Finally, we create a visual map of the user journey and system components. This map serves as a blueprint for the rest of the design sprint and ensures everyone is aligned on the project’s direction.

On the first day, we carry out these activities on the Miro board, utilizing a template from Just Mad that enables dynamic collaboration and easy adjustments as new insights emerge.

Day 2: Ideation and Prototyping

  1. Sketches: On the second day, we brainstorm and sketch various solutions to address the challenges identified on Day 1. This collaborative activity allows us to explore multiple ideas and select the most promising ones.
  2. User Test Flow: We then design a user test flow to understand how users will interact with the prototype. This step is crucial for ensuring the prototype meets user needs and expectations.
  3. Storyboards: Finally, we develop detailed storyboards to visualize the user experience and guide the prototyping phase. Storyboards help us create a clear and cohesive narrative for the prototype, making it easier to test and refine.

Unlike the digital approach of Day 1, this day is all about getting hands-on with paper and pen, fostering creativity and allowing for tangible, quick iterations.

Benefits of a Design Sprint for Clients

  1. Speed: One of the most significant advantages of a design sprint is the speed at which clients can see tangible results. In just two days, we can move from understanding the problem to testing a prototype.
  2. Collaboration: Design sprints enhance collaboration between PRIOT’s team and the client’s team. This close cooperation ensures that all stakeholders are aligned and that the final solution meets everyone’s expectations.
  3. Innovation: By encouraging innovative solutions through a structured yet flexible process, design sprints help us develop creative and effective solutions to complex problems.
  4. Risk Reduction: Identifying potential issues early in the development process allows us to address them before they become significant problems. This reduces the risk associated with launching new products or features.

To give you a better understanding of our design sprint process, we’ve included photos from a recent workshop with our client Telespor and development partner IRNAS. These images showcase the hands-on collaboration, creative ideation, and innovative problem-solving that took place during the design sprint.
